The case for paved roads

Good developer platforms make the right thing easier.

← All notes

An independent, general engineering perspective; not a description of proprietary systems or employer-specific work.

Start with repeatable needs

A platform should eliminate recurring cognitive load, not merely centralize it. Standardize the paths teams already need to travel.

Expose useful abstractions

Provide clear ownership boundaries, defaults, APIs, templates, and observability without hiding the underlying tradeoffs.

Keep escape hatches

Productive platforms are opinionated but not inflexible. Teams need room for exceptional workload needs without abandoning safety.

Measure adoption and friction

Time to first success, support burden, and reliability are more useful than the number of features on a platform roadmap.
